Introduction to Literature and Composition
Grades 9-10, One Credit
A survey course which introduces the student to the baskic terminology
of literature, allows the student to begin the study of great literature
and introduces the basics of formal composition.
World Literature and Composition
Grades 9-10, One Credit
A survey cours of translations of the world's greatest literature.
Students will read literature of the world's ancient civilizations
as well as the modern literature of Africa, Asia, South America,
and Europe. Students will begin to write coherent essays and use
advanced composition skills.
American Literature and Composition
Grades 10-11, One Credit
This course offers a survey of American literature beginning with
the lore of the Native American and continuing though the present.
Students will begin to develop a sense of style by using the writing
styles of American writers in their own compositions.
British Literature and Composition
Grades 11-12, One Credit
In this course students will be exposed to the greatest British
writers and their works. The study begins with Celtic literature
and continues through the present. Students will write short essays
about their readings and will write at least one documented term
paper.
Advanced Composition
Grades 11-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
An elective for either one semester of one year which allows students
to imporve their essay writing skills; suitable for any student
at an advanced or beginning level. Recommended for any student who
plans to continue their education at a college or university.
AP/Honors English
Grades 11-12, One Credit
This course requires the recommendation of the previous year's English
teacher and apporval by the AP/Honors teacher and the Dean of Students.
English Grammar - elective
Grades 9-12, One Credit
For any student who feels the need for a better grasp of grammar.
This course may also be required based on the recommendation of
a teacher.
Journalism - elective
Grades 9-12, One Credit
Students will experience reporting and journalistic style as well
as develop an understanding of all forms of news reporting. Students
in this class will produce the school newspaper.
Writing Workshop - elective
Grades 9-12, One Credit
In this course students will have the opportunity to use their creativity
with the written word. Students will work with all forms of creative
writing including dialogue, description and narrative.
