Upper School Curriculum

Electives

Art I
Grades 9-10, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
Students learn basic design vocabulary and begin to understand how these elements and principles of design will form a foundation for their future art work. Students learn how to use the expressive qualities of line, the color wheel, color selection, value, shape, character, texture, balance,unity, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, and patterns in their compositions.

Art II
Grades 10-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
Students will use their knowledge of art principles and design elements to create more advanced art projects in a variety of mediums. Students will be encouraged to use their own creativitiy and imaginations in all projects.

Photography
Grades 10-12, 1/2 Credit
Students will investigate black and white photography as an art form. Students will learn the fundamentals of fine art photography, focusing on photographic techniques and aesthetic issues involved within the medium.

Music Appreciation
Grades 9-12, 1/2 Credit
Students learn basic basic terminology and understanding of music. Students will also experience many types of music and musical insturments.

Individual Instrumental Music Lessons
Grades 9-12, 1/4 Credit
Individual instrumental and voice lessons are available for $60 per month for 1 lesson per week. Students may study guitar, flute, banjo, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, violin/fiddle, voice, and piano. Students must provide their own instrument (except for piano).

Chorus
Grades 9-12, 1/2 Credit
Students will be part of a group of vocal musicians and experience many types of music while improving their music knowledge.

Drama
Grades 9-12, 1/2 Credit
Students experience various types of performances and have the opportunity to perform for the school and community.

Computer Applications
Grades 9-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
This class provides students with the fundamental technology skills for society and college. Students learn basic hardware and software teminology and become proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, database production, and presentation software.

Computer Programming I
Grades 9-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
For students with advanced knowledge of technology. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of computer science using an industry accepted programming language such as C++, Java, or Visual Basic. Students will create original programs using the principles of structured and object oriented computer programming.

Computer Programming II
Grades 10-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
For students who have the skills presented in Computer Programming I. This course introduces students to advanced concepts of computer science using an industry accepted programming language such as C++, Java, or Visual Basic. Students will create advanced programs using the principles of structured and object oriented computer programming.

Web Design
Grades 9-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
For students with advanced knowledge of technology. Students will learn to create web pages that meet industry protocols using scripting languages such as XHTML and Javascript and industry accepted software such as Macromedia Studio MX and Adobe Photoshop. This course may be repeated.

Digital Graphics
Grades 9-12, One Credit or 1/2 Credit
For students with advanced knowledge of technology and art. Students learn to create two and three dimensional images and animation using industry accepted software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Macromedia Flash, 3D Studio Max.

English as a Second Language
Grades 9-12, One Credit
For inernational students. This class will focus on English grammar, usage, and vocabulary

SAT Preparation (Math)
Grades 9-12, 1/2 Credit (1/2 unit required for graduation)
Students will experience the information required for the Math portion of the SAT exam and will take several practice exams. This course helps students to improve their SAT score.

SAT Preparation (Verbal)
Grades 9-12, 1/2 Credit (1/2 unit required for graduation)
Students will experience the information required for the verbal portion of the SAT exam and will take several practice exams. This course helps students to improve their SAT score.
